Les Oiseaux (The Birds) by Aristophanes, is a delightful comedy from ancient Greece. First performed in 414 BC, the play follows two Athenians, Pisthetaerus and Euelpides, who, tired of the corruption and war in their city, set out to find a new home. They travel to the land of the birds, where they convince the avian creatures to build a new city in the sky, Cloudcuckooland, effectively cutting off the gods from the world of men.
Full of witty dialogue, fantastical situations, and sharp satire, Les Oiseaux is a timeless commentary on politics, society, and the human condition. Aristophanes' imaginative storytelling and clever wordplay continue to resonate with readers and audiences today, making it a cornerstone of classical literature.
