Research undertaken during recent years on the earliest documents of Chinese mathematics to come down to us have thrown into question certain generally accepted ideas about the history of mathematics. Since 1984, Karen Chemla has been working with Guo Shuchen on ''The Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures'', a work that dates from the first century A.D., regarded in ancient China as a classic'. The Nine Chapters concentrate for the most part on algorithms. Half the work is bi-lingual (ideograms on the left hand page with the French translation opposite). The other half is devoted to a critical commentary (introduction and notes) and appendices (glossary and bibliography).
