Ce livre part d'une observation que chacun a faite sans jamais la nommer. Après une agression, un deuil, un accident, une maladie, un licenciement, le comportement de l'entourage change. Pas immédiatement, pas brutalement: progressivement. On invite un peu moins. On coupe la parole un peu plus souvent. On finit par dire qu'elle est devenue difficile, qu'elle ressasse, qu'elle en fait trop. Personne n'a décidé quoi que ce soit. Le résultat est pourtant là .
Ce qui distingue ce phénomène de l'exclusion ordinaire est un détail que tout le monde manque: la personne n'est pas chassée. Elle est maintenue à l'intérieur du groupe qui la met en cause. On l'invite, on lui téléphone, on s'inquiète de son absence, et chaque contact reproduit le même traitement. C'est cette rétention, et non le rejet, qui fait le dommage.
L'enquête traverse les continents. Le mura hachibu japonais, seule société à avoir codifié la chose. Le pihaeja-daum coréen et l'affaire Choi Mal-ja, condamnée en 1964 pour s'être défendue contre son agresseur, acquittée soixante et un ans plus tard. Les proverbes chinois qui décrivent la chute d'un mur que tout le monde pousse. Les hôpitaux psychiatriques américains observés par Erving Goffman. Les universités étudiées par Carly Smith et Jennifer Freyd. Les organisations où les lanceurs d'alerte subissent des représailles, non parce qu'ils mentent, mais parce que ce qu'ils disent coûte cher.
Quinze mécanismes documentés sont réunis ici pour la première fois: la culpabilisation des victimes et la croyance en un monde juste, la punition du dévoilement, la désactivation évitante de ceux qui ne veulent pas entendre, le test d'admissibilité imposé aux victimes, la mystification qui disqualifie une parole en invoquant l'état mental de celui qui la tient, le nexus familial où personne n'est l'auteur de ce que le groupe produit, le looping qui rend impossible de bien se conduire, la fonction du bouc émissaire qu'on ne chasse pas, la chambre d'écho qui rend les preuves inutiles, le DARVO et le retournement final.
Le livre explique aussi pourquoi les conseils habituels échouent. Rassemblez des preuves. Confrontez-le calmement. Parlez-en à votre famille. Faites constater les faits. Chacun de ces conseils est excellent dans un conflit ordinaire, et désastreux dans un groupe clos, où toute preuve produite est reçue comme la manifestation d'une hostilité extérieure et renforce la conviction du groupe au lieu de l'ébranler.
Il fournit enfin cinq questions et deux tests permettant de reconnaître le dispositif en temps réel, et non des années après. Le plus utile de ces tests répond à la question qui torture le plus les personnes concernées: suis-je responsable de ce qui m'arrive ? Il y répond par l'observation plutôt que par l'introspection, ce qui est décisif.
Ce livre n'est pas un manuel de développement personnel et ne promet aucune méthode pour convaincre un groupe. Il propose autre chose: un nom, une description, et de quoi cesser de chercher en soi la cause de ce qu'on subit.
