Stendhal assurait n'avoir durabelement aimé que Saint-Simon et les épinards. Né frugal, Eric Ollivier ne s'attarde pas sur ses préférences culinaires. Au reste, les vraies, les seules nourritures de sa vie sont les livres, et s'il est devenu écrivain, c'est plus par amour que par vocation. Un amour qui, d'ailleurs, s'apparente davantage à celui du patriote qu'à celui du supirant: Si l'on me demandait à quel milieu, à quel peuple j'appartiens, je répondrais sans hésiter que j'appartiens à la civilisation des livres, à elle seule, qu'elle est ma nation... Livresse, en un mot.
Mais, de même que le style c'est l'homme, le livre c'est l'auteur. Dès son adolescence, Eric Ollivier a cherché à connaître ceux dont il admirait les oeuvres: Montherlant, Cocteau, Jouhandeau, Camus, Sartre, Mauriac surtout dont il devint le secrétaire après l'avoir abordé, tout à trac, sur une avenue sombre et déserte. Ces rencontres nous valent une série de portraits souvent tendres, parfois acides, toujours drôles, que dominent deux belles figures tôt disparues, celle presque sacralisée de Roger Nimier, et celle injustement oubliée de Stephen Hecquet.
Devenu, à son tour, une figure parisienne des lettres, Eric Ollivier n'en est pas moins demeuré le lecteur ébloui qu'il était dans son enfance bretonne. Un lecteur dont la modestie s'embresse de prévenir les louanges que l'écrivain mértie: Jules Renard conseille de toujours lire au-dessus de soi-même, c'est fort aisé dans mon cas. L'utile leçon de lecture que nous donnent Les Livres dans la peau se double ainsi d'une rare leçon d'élégance.
