Dans l'histoire de l'art et dans la littérature du XIXe siècle, la thématique de l'esclave occupe une place prépondérante. Que ce soit l'exploitation des jeunes au travail ou une forme plus moderne de l'abus des opprimés, on retrouve régulièrement une réflexion sur la position des enfants dans la peinture et les romans. Dans ce contexte, Hector Malot occupe une place à part dans la littérature française, dans la mesure où la figure de l'enfant esclave présente dans son oeuvre de multiples formes d'exploitation à l'époque de l'industrialisation. Considéré par de nombreux confrères comme un auteur secondaire par rapport aux noms célèbres tels que Flaubert ou Zola, le père de Sans Famille recherche surtout la probité, selon l'expression de la journaliste Séverine. En tant qu'ancien juriste, il estime en effet que le roman populaire doit présenter une réflexion historique sur les moeurs de son époque, tout en restant fidèle à l'esthétique réaliste-naturaliste. Pompon représente par exemple l'ambition des gens de lettres à analyser le colonialisme, l'esclavage des Noirs et la quête d'indépendance des adolescents. Après les travaux de Montesquieu et d'Arthur de Gobineau sur la diversité des races humaines, l'auteur propose un discours sociologique sur la discrimination des Africains et la situation des marginaux. En attribuant une mission salutaire à l'art, à la musique et à la sculpture, les romans de Malot dévoilent ainsi une poétique ambivalente, basée sur l'objectivité des faits réels et la subjectivité du créateur. En reproduisant en miroir l'antithèse même de l'existence, les récits invitent le lecteur à la compassion. Cet ouvrage met en lumière la spécificité d'un écrivain célèbre en son temps et tombé dans l'oubli de nos jours. En se fondant sur une approche comparative, historique et poétique, ce livre réhabilite une personnalité, dont la modernité inspire encore aujourd'hui la littérature de jeunesse.
