Au Bas-Canada, un capitaine de milice nommé Augustin Labadie tient un journal. Il y décrit la neige de juin, la misère des familles, les ponts de glace qui refusent de fondre. Deux siècles plus tard, son témoignage est au coeur de ce livre.
S'appuyant sur des sources primaires méconnues - journaux personnels, registres paroissiaux, archives parlementaires, relevés météorologiques du révérend Alexander Spark et de la famille McCord -, Alexandre Gagné reconstitue mois par mois la plus grande crise climatique de l'histoire du Bas-Canada.
La première partie suit le fil des événements de 1815 à 1818, en laissant parler les voix d'époque. La seconde partie offre un cadre scientifique rigoureux: preuves du refroidissement par la dendrochronologie et les données instrumentales, analyse de la mortalité dans les paroisses du Québec, et filiation entre l'éruption et les épidémies de choléra et de typhus qui ravageront le Canada dans les décennies suivantes.
