Secularism today gives rise to numerous debates, heated controversies and many misunderstandings.
In this erudite and demanding book, in which he engages in a close dialogue with the founding fathers as well as with numerous contemporary interpreters, Vincent Peillon shows how French secularism offers a wholly unique version of secularisation.
Neither a rejection and exclusion of the religious, nor a direct transposition of the religious into the secular, nor an individual 'tinkering' that would allow everyone to forge their own beliefs, French secularism implements a model of secularisation that has, until now, been curiously little studied. This model, which most closely defines the French exception, is inseparably religious and political, rational and mystical.
French secularism cannot be reduced to a legal framework of neutrality and the separation of church and state. Conceived as necessary to establish civic bonds, guarantee democracy, emancipate the individual and achieve social justice, it is a civil religion that embodies a new understanding of modernity. This understanding is the product of a long history--that of heresies.
