Marie-Claire est née en 1946 dans une ferme moyenâgeuse où sa famille vit en autarcie. Dans l'après-guerre, la France se relève des démolitions.
C'est l'histoire de paysans autonomes où le travail remplit la vie quotidienne au rythme des saisons, l'histoire d'une famille de 7 enfants où il faisait bon vivre, la bonne humeur rendant la tâche légère.
Alors que les conditions de l'agriculture s'adoucissent et évoluent, survient un évènement qui bouleverse tragiquement la vie de tous.
Elle a 30 ans quand son père l'envoie aux Etats Unis pour trouver une ferme où s'établir. En 1976, c'est une aventure. Marie-Claire, ne parlant pas l'anglais, compte sur l'assistance de son distant mari venu s'y installer après une traversée de l'Atlantic en solitaire. Accablée de chagrin et rongée de remord, elle débarque sur le nouveau monde avec son fils et son jeune frère.
Emigrés, ils rencontrent les difficultés qui pavent le chemin de l'adaptation et font la découverte du grand pays et de ses habitants dont la culture parfois étonne. Dans ces efforts renouvelés chaque jour, et guidée par la nature et ses effets thérapeutiques, elle trouve l'apaisement et attenue sa douleur.
Parmi ses aventures figure la construction d'un bateau en acier sur leur ferme au Tennessee en vue d'une circumnavigation, qui, à peine commencée, échoue dramatiquement.
Les peines s'enchainent aux joies et déferlent comme des vagues sur la mer et Marie-Claire se découvre.
A 70 ans, épaulée par son nouvel époux, sa famille et ses amis, elle enseigne le français et partage son histoire.
