L'Abbé Petitot sous le cercle polaire recounts the life and expeditions of Émile Fortuné Stanislas Joseph Petitot (1838-1916), a French missionary, geographer, and ethnologist who spent a significant portion of his life among the Indigenous peoples of the Canadian Northwest. Gabriel Gravier details Petitot's journeys, linguistic studies, and cultural observations, offering a valuable glimpse into the Arctic regions and the lives of its inhabitants during the late 19th century.
Gravier highlights Petitot's contributions to the understanding of the Athabaskan languages and his meticulous documentation of the customs and traditions of the Dene people. This biography illuminates Petitot's dedication to his missionary work and his profound respect for the cultures he encountered, making it an important resource for those interested in the history of exploration, missionary work, and the anthropology of the Canadian Arctic.
