Jérusalem !... Oh ! l'éclat mourant de ce nom !...
Comme il rayonne encore, du fond des temps et des poussières, tellement que je me sens presque profanateur, en osant le placer là , en tête du récit de mon pèlerinage sans foi ! Jérusalem !
Ceux qui ont passé avant moi sur la terre en ont déjà écrit bien des livres, profonds ou magnifiques.

Ceux qui ont passé avant moi sur la terre en ont déjà écrit bien des livres, profonds ou magnifiques.
Mais je veux simplement essayer de noter les aspects actuels de sa désolation et de ses ruines; dire quel est, à notre époque transitoire, le degré d'effacement de sa grande ombre sainte, qu'une génération très prochaine ne verra même plus... Pierre Loti, de son véritable nom Julien Viaud, s'inscrit dans la lignée des grands écrivains aventuriers et globe-trotteurs. Sa propre vie est digne d'une oeuvre romanesque et invite à l'évasion. Officier de marine, il sillonne le monde sur différents vaisseaux: Îles de Pâques, Afrique occidentale, Asie, Orient... Ce voyageur enivré d'Orient semble ponctuer chaque escale par un roman: Aziyadé, Le Roman d'un spahi, Madame Chrysanthème... Mais les Terres moins lointaines l'inspirent également avec notamment Ramuntcho et Pêcheur d'Islande. H.w.D ****************************************************************************
