Jean Calas is a five-act tragedy in verse by Jean-Louis Laya. This edition includes a historical preface about Jean Calas and is followed by a new fifth act.
The play explores the tragic story of Jean Calas, a Protestant merchant who was wrongly accused of murdering his son in 1761. Calas was subjected to torture and executed. Voltaire championed Calas's cause, revealing the injustice of the verdict. Laya's dramatic interpretation captures the emotional intensity of this historical event, offering a poignant commentary on religious intolerance and judicial error in pre-Revolutionary France.
This edition offers readers a compelling glimpse into a pivotal moment in French history and a moving exploration of justice, faith, and family.
