Jean Calas; tragédie en cinq actes, en vers. Précédée d'un préf. historique sur Jean Calas, & suivie d'un nouveau Ve. acte by Jean Louis Laya is a historical tragedy in five acts that delves into the infamous Jean Calas affair. Set against the backdrop of 18th-century France, this verse drama explores themes of religious intolerance, injustice, and the devastating consequences of prejudice. Laya's play, published in 1790, offers a dramatic interpretation of the events surrounding Jean Calas, a Protestant merchant wrongly accused of murdering his son. The tragedy is enriched by a historical preface and an additional fifth act, providing further context and reflection on the Calas case. This work remains a significant example of French dramatic literature and a powerful commentary on the human condition during a tumultuous period in history.
