Histoire de Saint Louis is Jean de Joinville's biography of Louis IX, King of France. Written in Old French, it offers a firsthand account of the king's life, character, and reign, providing invaluable insights into 13th-century France and the Crusades. Joinville, a close companion of Louis, recounts the king's piety, justice, and leadership, as well as his experiences during the Seventh Crusade. This edition presents the original text, accompanied by notes on the language and grammar of Joinville, and a glossary to aid modern readers in understanding the nuances of the Old French. The work is a cornerstone of French literature and a crucial historical document, offering a personal and intimate portrait of a pivotal figure in European history. It remains a compelling read for anyone interested in the Middle Ages, the Crusades, and the life of a saintly king.
