Il y a plus de deux mille ans, un groupe de prêtres juifs quitta le Temple de Jérusalem, convaincu que la prêtrise qui le dirigeait avait été irrémédiablement corrompue. Ils se retirèrent dans le désert de Judée, y fondèrent une communauté disciplinée, régie par une loi stricte et la mise en commun des biens, et attendirent une bataille finale qui, selon eux, devait rétablir l'ordre du monde.
Ils se nommaient eux-mêmes le Yahad. L'Histoire les a retenus sous le nom d'Esséniens.
Pendant des siècles, tout ce que nous savions de cette communauté provenait de trois observateurs antiques extérieurs: l'historien Flavius Josèphe, le philosophe Philon d'Alexandrie et le naturaliste romain Pline l'Ancien. Puis, en 1947, un berger à la recherche d'une chèvre égarée découvrit, près de la mer Morte, une grotte remplie de manuscrits anciens. Pour la première fois, les Esséniens allaient pouvoir parler en leur propre nom.
