Each volume of this encyclopedia of the essential is intended for use by secondary-school teachers and instructors, by college underclassmen and teachers in training, by candidates for qualifying examinations and, moreover or most of all, by curious minds seeking access to different fields of study. Collection directed by Pierre Desplanques LIFE AND THE EARTH Directed by Robert Larue Our choice of a single work on Life and the Earth translates our willingness to integrate life sciences and earth science. Of course these sciences, like their constituent parts, have their specificity, and the biological world, in its prodigious diversity, differs from the mineral world. But the life and earth sciences are considered one subject of instruction at the middle and high school level. The interweaving, past and present, of natural events, the evocation of the same elements -- those that make up the universe -- and to a large extent the same physico-chemical phenomena on either side of the living-nonliving border, justify this, as do the styles of thought common to specialists in both domains, their specialities aside. In emphasizing this double unity, scientific and methodological, we would illustrate the coherence of the life and earth sciences, the natural sciences. The plan we have adopted translates our desire to transcend traditional divisions, between biology and geology, but also between the various subdisciplines of life science, as between those of the earth sciences. Water, the subject of the first part, is common to both living beings and to the functioning of the planet; circulating from one to the other, it contributes to their relationship. The processes addressed in the second part (Earth of Life) do discriminate between living systems and the mineral world, but their respective physico-chemical fundaments underlie their interaction. These are largely illustrated over the course of the very short bio-ecological history -- only some hundreds of millions of years long! -- of our planet, subject of the third part. Finally, at least several of the issues (for Man) presented in the fourth part, notably those concerning the environment, can only be understood by drawing on a varied and multidisciplinary bank of information. Present throughout the book, the applications and implications of science are given particular attention in the fourth part (Future Issues). These address the need to link the instruction of scientific concepts with their human manifestations, notably as concerns health and the environment. These are actually the areas in which citizens, even as mere newspaper readers and television viewers, are most often asked to pass judgement. The issues, selected and dealt with relative to Man, are seen in terms of current conditions and of the predictable short-term development of science and technology. Another choice we made was to base our treatment of most subjects on the use of documents, in a progressive elucidative sequence. It was inspired by this attitude, common to the natural and experimental sciences: to set out from facts, to move towards models and return to facts, whether in the course of fieldwork or in the laboratory (Jean Aubouin). Of course, the mind's investigations are guided by knowledge already acquired, but it is Nature as is that we would explain. Reality cannot be deduced from theoretical models. In situations which favor it, emphasis is placed on the manner in which documents are used, the first of which at least comes as close as possible to reality (photography, description, results of counting, analysis, measurements...).
