Joseph Fouché, l'un des hommes les plus puissants de son époque et l'un des plus remarquables de tous les temps, a trouvé peu d'amour auprès de ses contemporains et encore moins de justice auprès de la postérité. Napoléon, à Sainte-Hélène, Robespierre, parmi les Jacobins, Carnot, Barras, Talleyrand dans leurs Mémoires, et tous les écrivains français, royalistes, républicains ou bonapartistes, trempent leur plume dans du fiel dès qu'ils doivent écrire son nom. Traître né, misérable intrigant, nature de reptile, transfuge professionnel, âme basse de policier, pitoyable immoraliste, aucune injure ne lui a été épargnée .
L'histoire a relégué silencieusement au dernier rang des figurants insignifiants cet homme qui, à un tournant du monde, a dirigé tous les partis et a été le seul à leur survivre, et qui, dans un duel d'ordre psychologique, a vaincu un Napoléon et un Robespierre.
Seul, Balzac a vu de la grandeur dans cette figure originale, justement parce que lui-même était grand parmi les grands. Ce haut esprit, plein de pénétration, qui fouillait non seulement la scène mais encore les coulisses du temps, a reconnu sans réserve dans Fouché le caractère psychologiquement le plus intéressant de son siècle. Il dira encore de lui qu'il a possédé plus de puissance sur les hommes que Napoléon lui-même .
Il faut faire un certain effort pour se représenter le même homme de chair et d'os, en 1790, professeur ecclésiastique et dès 1792 pilleur d'églises, en 1793 communiste, et à peine cinq ans après plusieurs fois millionnaire, enfin, dix ans plus tard duc d'Otrante. Avec cet ouvrage, Stefan Zweig signe encore une fois une biographie remarquable et dépeint avec brio cette époque trouble de l'Histoire de France.
Un livre incontournable pour qui s'intéresse de près ou de loin à la révolution française et l'époque napoléonienne. Dans la même collection:
