Theatre is not a simple medium. On the one hand, it is a performative art form that involves all the human senses?: it lives from the spoken word, captivating voices and intonations and the power of immediate performances which have their roots in the magical practices of oral cultures and personal communication. On the other hand, theatre (as we know and practice it in the Western world) is deeply rooted in the momentous origin of the phonetic alphabet in ancient Greece. Since its beginning, theatre has operated at the point of conflict between the drama's textuality (the roll of the text) and its theatrical realisation on stage (the role of the actor or actress). To investigate forms of theatre in the contexts of modern culture and media, the following article deals with both sides?: the intrinsic medial aspects of theatre (the importance of writing and performing, actors and actresses or the architectural and social dispositives of theatre as a cultural institution) and the various influences of modern media such as photography, phonography, (silent) movies or radio in the years between 1870 and 1930.
