Esther is a tragedy in three acts by French playwright Jean Racine, first performed in 1689. Written at the request of Madame de Maintenon for the girls of the Maison royale de Saint-Louis, a school for young noblewomen, the play tells the story of Esther, the Jewish queen of Persia, and her role in saving her people from annihilation.
