Essai Sur La Nouvelle-Espagne by Alexander von Humboldt is a seminal work offering a detailed and comprehensive overview of New Spain (present-day Mexico) in the early 19th century. Based on Humboldt's extensive scientific expedition, the book explores the region's geography, geology, natural resources, population, economy, and social structure. Humboldt provides invaluable insights into the colonial administration, indigenous cultures, and the potential for future development.
Written in French, the Essai remains a crucial historical document for understanding the complexities of colonial Latin America. It showcases Humboldt's interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific observation with social and political analysis, making it an enduring resource for scholars and anyone interested in the history of Mexico and the legacy of European colonialism.
