D'Epictetos, peintre athenien de vases a figures rouges, on conserve une quarantaine de signatures. 164 vases lui sont attribues avec plus ou moins de certitude. Essentiellement peintre de coupes, Epictetos se distingue par son dessin elegant et sa simplicite expressive, a une epoque charniere pour l'histoire de l'art antique, la fin du sixieme et le debut du cinquieme siecle, quand Euphronios et ses compagnons revoltionnerent la representation de la figure humaine. Notre conviction est qu'Epictetos, connu par un nombre de vases suffisamment eleve pour en tirer des donnees de valeur statistique, se revele pleinement comme un peintre novateur au niveau de l'iconographie, dont l'influence ne fut pas negligeable sur ses contemporains.
