Ce livre vise à combler une lacune et rétablir une image d'Elsa Triolet qui ne soit pas celle de la muse d'Aragon ou de son égérie dominatrice, mais d'une auteure de qualité, dont les romans abordent les grands problèmes du siècle, notamment ceux des femmes. Elle est avec Colette l'une des premières écrivaines féministes du xxe siècle, dont la biographie passionnante est aussi engendrée par son travail d'écriture. Encouragée par Chklovski et par Gorki, elle a commencé à écrire, publié trois romans et un essai en russe, puis est passée à l'écriture en français lorsqu'il lui fut impossible d'être éditée en Union soviétique. Son oeuvre est un exemple de l'interpénétration de langues et de cultures en lien constant. Le but de ce livre est aussi de montrer cette communication littéraire et artistique.
