A Debate on Secularity

One year has passed since the vote on the Islamic head-scarf, and it is time to take stock. Was the vote of this law justified? Did it solve the problems? Two well-known observers debate the ins and outs of the question: Sociologist Alain Touraine was part of the Stasi committee which report initiated the move towards a new law; Alain Renaut, professor of philosophy and politics, is known for his opinion in favor of a reasoned multiculturalism.
Both share a similar respect for republican values, but where muslim extremism is concerned, they differ on the means to counter it, as they differ on the role of the school system and the best ways of establishing the rights of cultural minorities. Renaut is opposed to the law and assesses the French policy on cultural diversity in highly critical terms. Touraine continues to defend the law on the head-scarf, which he thinks helped to slow down the growth of extremism.
