In 1892 The British Museum acquired one of the great French masterpieces of the 14th century, the Saint Agnes Cry, known as The Royal Gold Cup. This massive enamelled gold cup, destined for great feasts, is recorded since 1391 when it was given by the great patron of the arts, Jean duc de Berry, to his nephew, Charles VI. Probably intended as a gift for his elder brother, Charles V, who was born on Saint Agnes' day, the exquisite decoration of the cup, of unrivalled beauty, presents a sequence of scenes from the life and martyrdom of Saint Agnes. The cup's history is extraordinary, first at the royal court of France in the time of the Valois, then in the royal treasury of England in the 15th and 16th centuries, given by James I to the Duke of Frias, it travelled with him to Spain where he gave it in 1610 to the Poor Clares of Medina de Pomar. Returned to Paris in 1883, it was rejected by the great collectors of the time as a fake but was bought by the baron Pichon. Finally its travels ended in London, where it is today.
