Convivium..., also known as The Symposium, is a philosophical text by Plato, likely written around 385-378 BC. It is one of Plato's most famous and influential dialogues. The dialogue depicts a friendly contest of extemporaneous speeches given by a group of notable men attending a banquet. The men include the philosopher Socrates, the general and politician Alcibiades, the playwright Aristophanes, and the physician Eryximachus. The subject of their speeches is the nature of Eros (love). The speeches range from the comic to the deeply philosophical.
