A pivotal document in the history of the Papal States, Constitution Donnée, De Sa Propre Volonté presents the constitution granted by Pope Pius VII to the Roman States on July 6, 1816. This French translation offers readers access to the original text issued in Rome, providing insights into the governance and legal framework established in the aftermath of the Napoleonic era.
This constitution reflects the efforts to restore and modernize the administration of the Papal States following years of upheaval. It outlines the powers and responsibilities of the various governmental bodies, aiming to balance traditional authority with contemporary needs. Students of political science, religious history, and European history will find this text invaluable for understanding the complexities of 19th-century governance and the enduring influence of the Catholic Church.
