But on the morning of her birthday, Alma could tell something was wrong. What was initially just a vague feeling of disgust rapidly developed into unpredictable nymphomaniac and destructive impulses: her existential angst then drove her to an incomprehensibly violent spree.

Claire Berest was born in Paris in 1982. After travelling around North America and Europe as part of a music group, she became a French teacher but resigned once she had secured a tenure. She had her first novel, Mikado, published at 27. This was followed by another novel, L'orchestre vide, and two essays: La lutte des classes, pourquoi j'ai démissionné de l'Éducation nationale and Enfants perdus, enquête à la brigade des mineurs.
