Parmi les nombreux problèmes à surmonter pour édifier une cathédrale, plusieurs sont évidents:
- Comment concevoir et dimensionner précisément une telle structure, avec ses ouvertures élancées et son impressionnante hauteur sous voute et comment être sûr de sa stabilité ?
- Comment définir très précisément la forme et les dimensions des pierres de géométrie complexe et comment les communiquer contractuellement aux tailleurs de pierre éloignés de dizaines de kilomètres ?
- Comment édifier de telles voutes et de telles flèches à partir de pierres de tailles si modeste pour un tel édifice ?
Encore de nos jours, ces problèmes mobilisent les connaissances pointues d'ingénieurs en Génie Civil et les heures de calculs d'ordinateurs puissants.
Nous avons du mal à imaginer que des compagnons et maitres d'il y a dix siècles aient pu concevoir et réaliser de telles prouesses sans les ressources technologiques et scientifiques modernes.
A l'aube du second millénaire ils mirent en oeuvre des secrets techniques jalousement gardés et enrichis par les générations de techniciens qui les ont précédés, transmis exclusivement entre initiés ayant fait leurs preuves. Ce texte est une tentative argumentée de compréhension des principaux ressorts techniques de conception et de fabrication des cathédrales. Exercées et transmises dans le plus grand secret, il n'existe pas de preuve formelle et définitive qu'ils sont réellement ceux utilisés.
