On January 1st 1926, the airwaves crackled to the sound of a new radio station in Dublin, 2RN. While the Irish Free State joined the pantheon of global broadcasters, its birth was troubled. Unsure whether radio in Ireland should be a commercial enterprise or State run, the Government formed a Wireless Committee but it became mired in controvery with rumours, fraud charges, suicides and an inability to plerase everyone. From humble beginnings above a disused warehouse in the heart of Dublin, 2RN opened and despite financial constraints, competition from abroad and a certain suspcian of the airwaves, Irish radio thrived. 2RN became Radio Eireann and today is RTE Radio, now just part of a expansive radio landscape across the country.
