Ce qui suit n'est pas un roman d'espionnage ordinaire. C'est le récit d'un mariage, d'une foi et d'une famille que l'on démantèle phrase raisonnable après phrase raisonnable, par un mari qui a dit un jour à sa femme, avec bonté, que tout peut être fait pour le pays, et par un service qui, depuis, n'a jamais cessé d'écouter.
Au service de la nation se déplace entre un restaurant londonien sous tension, un salon du Caire dix ans plus tôt, et l'effritement lent d'un foyer qui croit encore avoir le choix. Suzi, à qui l'on avait un jour demandé de renoncer à quelque chose d'aussi petit qu'un morceau de tissu noir, doit à présent renoncer à bien davantage - et découvre qu'elle avait déjà accepté avant même qu'on le lui demande. Leur fille Nadine récite une prière à une table où plus personne ne montre sa foi, sans savoir qu'elle a déjà été remarquée.
Écrit dans une prose sobre et précise, cette novella parle de la mécanique qui rend des gens ordinaires complices de ce qu'ils n'auraient jamais choisi de leur plein gré, et de la cruauté particulière d'une bonté qui, tôt ou tard, présente toujours sa facture.
