Selon nous, en effet, la traduction de la langue maternelle en langue étrangère - le thème - est une voie idéale de pénétrer dans les coulisses de la langue étrangère et, en même temps, de redécouvrir, par ricochet, les subtilités de la langue maternelle, vu que la traduction n'est pas uniquement un but en soi, mais aussi et surtout une excellente base de comparaison entre deux langues.
La pratique a démontré que la langue-base exerce une influence positive et négative en même temps sur la langue seconde. Les similarités structurelles entre elle et la langue étrangère facilitent, certes, l'assimilation de cette dernière - les comparatistes parlent alors de transfert, et les différences rendent ce processus difficile, en ce sens que les habitudes de comportement verbal acquises dans la langue maternelle gênent et encombrent la création de nouvelles habitudes comportementales dans la langue étrangère, ce que les comparatistes appellent interférence.
L'interférence est un phénomène complexe, définissable en des termes psychologiques, comme une contamination de comportements, en des termes linguistiques, comme un accident de bilinguisme et, en des termes pédagogiques, comme un type particulier d'erreur, laquelle consiste en la transposition abusive de structures de la langue-base dans la production de messages dans la langue-cible.
L'interférence est donc la conséquence des différences systématiques qui séparent les deux langues qui se confrontent (et parfois s'affrontent, voire !) dans le processus de l'enseignement, étant favorisée par les ressemblances qui existent entre elles (soit sur le plan du contenu, soit sur le plan de l'expression, soit sur les deux) .
On peut en conclure - du moins en théorie - que, plus les deux langues se ressemblent, plus le danger d'interférence est imminent, ce qui revient à dire que, stimulés par les éventuelles similitudes, les étudiants perdront de vue la différence spécifique....
Les interférences surgissent lorsque deux unités linguistiques comparables de la langue-base et de la langue-cible, présentent un certain nombre d'éléments communs et d'éléments différenciateurs. Négliger ou se méprendre sur les éléments différenciateurs de la langue-cible, a pour résultat de neutraliser les oppositions propres à son système et à des erreurs de type interférentiel.
