Thisvolume contains the text of the five Ehsan and Latifeh YarshaterDistinguished Lectures on Iranian Studies, organized by the Unité Mixtede Recherche 7528 Mondes iranien et indien, and delivered at the Collègede France in Paris. The aim of this book is to take stock of thearchitectural and figurative culture of Sasanian Iran on the basis of anew comprehensive evaluation of the varied range of architectural andartistic evidence known to us, and in the light of the recent discoveriespublished in Iran over the last few years. Without any pretence of beingexhaustive, the idea is to bring more light to bear on the utilisation ofbuilt-up areas, forms of expression and visual communication, and themechanisms involved in artisanal production. Two chapters are dedicated tothe architecture, a field in which we are far from having arrived at ageneral consensus, while another chapter deals with a category of artisticproduction closely linked to the architecture, namely stucco work. Theother two chapters look into the technical-stylistic aspects of types ofproduction so far studied mainly from the iconographic point of view: therock reliefs and the seals.
