This monographpresents an overview of eight archaeological sites in the eastern partof the historical province of Ayrarat - corresponding to theadministrative regions of Shirak and Aragatzotn in the current Republicof Armenia - areas which have had limited coverage in the literature. The history of these marchlands - continually places of conflictinginterests - has been dominated by the flourishing city of Ani, nowsituated in Turkey. Since the latter part of the 19th century, Ani hasattracted the interest of scholars. The French archaeological mission(from 1998 to 2005), whose findings are presented in this work, focusesupon the monumental heritage of this important capital city. It alsocovers the eastern bank of the Akhourian-Arpachay River, which marks themodern border between Turkey and Armenia. Over the course of sevenyears, the project has studied various sites of defensive, religious, economic, and residential interest. Mainly active from the 10th to the14th centuries, nevertheless, the vestiges of monuments from the periodbefore the Arab conquest in the 7th century are also to be found. Thesehave come down to us in spite of transformations occurring during a noless troubling modern period. For each site, the study is based uponheretofore unpublished reports, accompanied by soundings of thestratigraphy of the soil, a reexamination of the literary sources andthe surviving epigraphy, as well as a consultation of the archives.
