FRANZ: The Boy Who Wanted to Do the Impossible tells the true story of Franz Liszt, the remarkable child who grew into one of the greatest pianists of his time.
Franz grew up surrounded by music. His father, Adam Liszt, recognized his unusual ability early, and Franz soon began learning difficult music, composing, and performing in public. His talent eventually took him to Vienna, where he studied piano with Carl Czerny, who had studied with Beethoven.
But Franz's path was not always easy. When his family moved to Paris, he was refused admission to the Paris Conservatoire. He kept studying, performing, composing, and traveling anyway. Then he heard Niccolò Paganini play the violin and became fascinated by what seemed impossible. Franz wanted to discover what the piano could do when pushed just as far.
His performances eventually inspired a level of excitement so intense that poet Heinrich Heine gave it a name: Lisztomania. As Franz grew older, he performed less and became a conductor, teacher, and composer, continuing to shape the musical world in new ways.
The book also invites readers to listen to Franz's music, including La Campanella, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Consolation No. 3, Liebestraum No. 3, and other works that reveal both the thunder and tenderness of his piano writing.
A lively introduction to a musician who refused to let rejection, difficulty, or the limits of the piano decide what was possible.
