Canadian Ojibwe Sniper, Scout, and One of Canada's Most Decorated Indigenous Soldiers of World War I
Francis Pegahmagabow was one of the most remarkable soldiers of the First World War - a quiet Ojibwe man from Wasauksing First Nation who became a legendary scout, sniper, and decorated hero on the battlefields of Europe.
Born near Parry Sound, Ontario, Pegahmagabow grew up close to the land, learning patience, silence, observation, and endurance. When the Great War erupted in 1914, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent into the mud, wire, shellfire, and terror of the Western Front. There, in places such as Ypres, the Somme, and Passchendaele, he earned a reputation for extraordinary courage.
Serving with the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Pegahmagabow became known for his skill as a scout and marksman. He moved through no man's land, gathered intelligence, guided patrols, and survived some of the most brutal fighting of the war. Awarded the Military Medal with two bars, he became one of the most decorated Indigenous soldiers in Canadian military history.
But this book is not only the story of a soldier.
When Pegahmagabow returned home, he faced another battle - the struggle against discrimination, government control, and the restrictions placed on First Nations communities under the Indian Act. As a veteran, chief, councillor, and advocate, he fought for the rights and dignity of his people with the same determination he had shown in war.
Francis Pegahmagabow tells the story of a man shaped by courage, loss, identity, survival, and resistance. It explores his Ojibwe roots, his wartime service, his battlefield reputation, his postwar struggles, and his lasting legacy as both a Canadian war hero and an Indigenous leader.
This book is ideal for readers interested in:
World War I history
Canadian military history
Indigenous veterans
Forgotten soldiers of the Great War
Snipers and scouts of WWI
Ojibwe history
First Nations leadership and resistance
Francis Pegahmagabow's story deserves to be remembered not only because of what he did in battle, but because of what he stood for after the war was over.
He was more than a sniper.
He was a survivor, a leader, and a voice for his people.
