Excerpt: ... THE PILGRIM FATHERS, FOUNDERS OF NEW ENGLAND. Out of the terrible stress and strain which times of great social, civil, and religious movement produce, noble and heroic men often arise. Times of extreme urgency in a nation's life call for, and help to mould, men of vast capacity, -whilst they also afford spacious scope for the exercise and development of the largest faculties. But this aspect of the relation of men to events, and their mutual action, we do not regard as dispensing with that devout view which looks upon God as raising up men specially fitted and qualified to meet the necessities of their times. He who alone sees the end from the beginning, and traces the far-reaching issues of all events, subordinates all and shapes all to His will. The very conjunction of the men and the circumstances, as the conjunction of the planets in their obedience to astronomical law, shows the hand of One above, timing and regulating events according to His purpose, and bringing into near and active relation the instruments and the work. The people of Israel remained for generations in the cruel and degrading slavery of Egypt, but at the fit moment Moses is born, and by his peculiar and special education in the royal court of the Pharoahs, and in the still and remote solitudes of Sinai, where he held communion with the Eternal, he is specially qualified to be their leader and emancipator.
