Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress is a 1724 novel by Daniel Defoe. It is the autobiography of a woman who gives up her virtue for survival initially, then for fame and fortune later. It has been called a post-feminist work, examining the contemporary patriarchal society through the enterprising and independent character of Roxana before a feminist ideology had been fully formed. Daniel Defoe (1660 - 1731), was an English trader, journalist, writer, pamphleteer, and spy best known for his novel Robinson Crusoe. He was a prolific writer, producing over five hundred books, journals, and pamphlets on a variety of topics ranging from religion, politics, and crime to psychology and the supernatural. Defoe is recognised as being among the earliest pioneers of the novel and as being one of the founders of the English novel. This classic novel is highly recommended for all lovers of the English language. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of erotic literature.
