Fort Desolation is a novel written by R.M. Ballantyne, a Scottish author who was famous for his adventure stories. The book is set in the Canadian wilderness and follows the story of a group of fur traders who are trying to establish a trading post in a remote and dangerous area. The main character of the story is a young man named Archie Armstrong, who joins the group as a clerk. The journey to establish the trading post is fraught with danger and challenges, including hostile indigenous tribes, harsh weather conditions, and treacherous terrain. The group must also contend with a rival fur trading company that is trying to establish a foothold in the same area. As the story unfolds, Archie becomes increasingly involved in the struggles of the group and begins to take on a leadership role. He also falls in love with a young woman named Alice, who is the daughter of the leader of the rival trading company. Fort Desolation is a thrilling adventure story that captures the excitement and danger of the Canadian wilderness in the 19th century. It is also a story about love, loyalty, and the struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving environment. When the Indian recovered sufficiently to give an account of himself to Marteau, who understood his language perfectly, he told him, to the surprise of all, that his double wound was indeed the result of an accident, and, moreover, that he had done the deed with his own hand. Doubtless it will puzzle the reader to imagine how a man could so twist himself, that with an unusually long gun he could send a bullet at one shot through his right arm and right thigh. It puzzled Jack and his men so much, that they were half inclined to think the Indian was not telling the truth, until he explained that about a mile above the hut, while walking through the bushes, he tripped and fell. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
