The Formation Manual for the Clergy and Faithful of the Ancient Apostolic Primitive Catholic Church is a comprehensive guide to the theological, spiritual, liturgical, pastoral, and ascetical life of the AAPCC, composed under the authority of the Most Reverend Kenneth J. Canterbury, Presiding Bishop, and approved by ecclesiastical imprimatur for use throughout the Church.
Drawing deeply from Holy Scripture, the Apostolic Fathers, the Desert tradition, and the patristic heritage of both East and West, this manual presents a unified vision of Christian life rooted in the faith of the primitive Church. Its theological and spiritual identity is distinctively Origenian and hesychast in character, integrating the contemplative tradition of the Christian East - including the teachings of Origen, Evagrius Ponticus, the Desert Fathers, and the hesychast masters - with the Apostolic ecclesiology, sacramental theology, and liturgical life of the ancient Catholic tradition.
Organized in seven parts and thirty-seven chapters, the manual moves from the nature of the Church through the holy mysteries and sacramental life, into an extended treatment of the spiritual life in all its dimensions: prayer, asceticism, the daily rule, the mystical life and contemplative prayer, discernment of the passions, hesychia and interior prayer, the Desert Fathers, Origenian theology, the theology of Evagrius Ponticus, theosis and sanctification, and the redemptive meaning of suffering. A full section on ordained ministry treats the bishop, presbyter, deacon, and minor orders in succession. Governance, ethics, pastoral care, and the Rule of Life for Clergy follow, culminating in chapters on evangelization, the Church's engagement with the modern world, and the eschatological hope of resurrection and the Kingdom of God.
Ten appendices provide practical and devotional reference material, including a guide to the Daily Office and the Origen Breviary, the Liturgical Year, vestments and liturgical symbolism, preparation for the Holy Eucharist, the Christian home as a domestic church, pastoral care of the sick and dying, the Apostolic Fathers and recommended reading, mystical theology and contemplative prayer, and the Rule of Conduct for Clergy.
Throughout, the manual maintains a reverent archaic English prose style consonant with its liturgical character. It addresses itself equally to the ordained clergy, seminarians and candidates for orders, and the faithful who seek deeper formation in Apostolic Christianity. Its governing conviction is that authentic Christian life is not primarily institutional membership or intellectual assent, but the continual transformation of the whole person - body, soul, and spirit - into the likeness of Christ through grace, prayer, sacramental life, and sacrificial love.
