Everyone has a plan for the evening. None of them expects the truth to arrive.
Lola travels from Watford to Milton Keynes to meet Kwashi, a married man carrying a white envelope filled with 2,000. The money is intended to help Jessica, Lola's fiercely independent best friend, although Jessica knows nothing about it and would refuse it if she knew where it came from.
Kwashi has told his wife, Evelyn, that he is attending an office event in London. Evelyn has invented a family celebration in Birmingham so that she can meet Anthony, a man growing tired of being hidden inside the uncertain spaces of her marriage.
When their separate plans lead them to the same crowded venue, the evening descends into comic confusion. A nervous husband, a suspicious wife, an unexpected reunion and one disastrous attempt to hide beneath a restaurant table bring carefully guarded secrets into the open.
Then Jessica arrives and recognises someone she believed had disappeared for ever.
What begins as one chaotic evening becomes a reckoning with broken families, divided loyalties and the dangerous belief that loving someone gives us the right to decide what is best for them.
Warm, witty and deeply human, For the Sake of My Friend is a contemporary story about friendship tested by secrecy, families reshaped by truth and imperfect people learning that finding the way home is only the beginning.
One evening. One white envelope. Several secrets with nowhere left to hide.
