This book began its life as a dissertation submitted for the degree of Master of Arts in Anthropology at the University of Lucknow. It was written the way most dissertations are, tailored for a department, an examination panel, and a strict academic deadline. What follows in these pages, however, has outgrown that original, narrower mandate. It has become an earnest attempt to document, for any curious reader, the intricate meanings of food within a community whose everyday cultural life has rarely been recorded with such intimacy.
Kashmiri Mohalla is one of Lucknow's historic quarters that many pass through without pausing to look deeper. I chose to stay. Over months of ethnography and fieldwork, I sat in family kitchens, watched neighbourhood halwais fry samosas to order, and listened to elders explain the sacred nuances of festival recipes. Gradually, I realized that a plate of food in this locality is never merely sustenance. It is living heritage: an edible archive of migration, memory, faith, kinship, and enduring celebration, all gathered into a single meal.
While the core ethnographic findings and the living voices of the community remain entirely uncompromised, the presentation has been reshaped. The academic apparatus of formal declarations and administrative certificates has made way for a narrative accessible to a wider readership, allowing the stories and cultural insights to take centre stage.
My deepest gratitude goes to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Lucknow, and most reverently to my supervisor, Professor Keya Pandey, whose scholarly guidance, patient mentorship, and profound intellectual encouragement shaped this research from its inception. Above all, I remain indebted to the residents of Kashmiri Mohalla, who welcomed a student with a notebook into their homes and shared their tables with extraordinary warmth. This book belongs to them as much as it does to me.
