Folktales of Kashmir is a collection of traditional stories from the Indian region of Kashmir, compiled and translated by J. Hinton Knowles. The book features a variety of tales, ranging from humorous and lighthearted to eerie and mysterious. Many of the stories center around themes of love, adventure, and the supernatural, and they offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. The book is divided into several sections, each focusing on a different type of story, such as animal fables, legends, and ghost stories. Knowles's translations are faithful to the original Kashmiri language, and he provides helpful context and commentary for each tale. Overall, Folktales of Kashmir is an engaging and informative read for anyone interested in folklore, mythology, or South Asian culture.1893. Kashmir as a field of folklore literature is, perhaps, not surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world; and yet, while every year witnesses the publication of books on the subject from Bengal, Bombay, Madras, Panjab and other parts, this field has remained almost ungleaned. Rev. Knowles sought to present these tales in a purely literary form as to give them in a fair translation. He hopes that they will prove a real contribution toward the increasing stock of folklore which is doing so much to clear away the clouds that envelop much of the practices, ideas and beliefs which make up the daily life of the natives of this country, controls their feelings and underlies many of their actions. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
