The story starts with the unsolicited benevolence of nature in contrast to the evil by man against his fellow as shown with the murder of Safina, Asabe and Amirat. Their deaths however become sources of strength to Hanatu in her crusade against the poor state of women. The urchins; the Almajiris, who are supposed to be the progressive youths and the pride of the nation have unfortunately been manipulated, and have become destructive machines in the hand of the leaders, and welcome within the culture of the people. This is the time the world is breaking walls and ideological barriers and; the merger of East and West Germany, the dismembering of the United Soviet Socialist Republic; the Perestioka giving way to positive reforms.

Hanatu and Osareme are among the privileged, and having western education. This is the tonic in Hanatu's drive in life to erase the ugly cultural practices that are inimical to the development of women, now resisted in Duse.

Osareme creates relative positive waves with the aid of the government at Isale. She receives International Merit Award in Beijing on her campaigns for better life for women.

Hanatu and Osareme have lost contact as the analog era in communication was a barrier. Osareme blazes the trail, meeting with the high in the society in her position as Minister of Women Affairs. The position was earlier proposed for a man in the cabinet. In her pains, Hanatu writes letters to her old time accomplice, Osareme. The reply brings further heart-break to her.

It is never a bed of roses in Owanwu as Adaora relates the horrifying practices against women.

The distrust that ensues among the women of the various educational, culturall, and social interests at Isale becomes a disintegrating factor. Alero the celebrated lawyer and emancipator, and the elitist Yemi represent the trending women. Miriam's split personality makes her sober and agitated to the possessive display of Alero and others at Isale. She swears to make things difficult for Alero in Duse whenever the opportunity calls.

The continued mobilization of women by Alero is yielding dividends. Alero becomes widely accepted by women groups and is encouraged to explore grounds in partisan politics to the highest position. Her disillusionment comes so soon, as she beholds all the women file out, supporting her male counterpart in the primary election to select candidate for presidential position of her party. Hearing Bisi say, if a woman serving under a man's government was a slave, then a woman serving under a woman's government would be far below the status of a slave, becomes the worst cut of them all. She fails.

Hanatu regrets. Now they have denied us as we have already caused much harm on ourselves. I have realized that if we do not work together, we would go into extinction.
