A Fleeting Dawn gathers Leyla Margarita TobÃas Buelvas's earliest poetry, revised, expanded and transformed through more than a decade of writing. Its subject is love as it passes through desire, fulfilment, waiting, intimacy, separation, memory and renewed hope. Each encounter leaves something behind, and poetry becomes the means through which the fleeting acquires permanence.
The dawn of the title gives the collection its governing image. It is the hour of transition, when night remains present as light begins: an image suited to relationships remembered at the point where presence becomes absence and experience becomes memory. Leyla returns to these moments in order to discover what time has revealed within them.
Her poems preserve the immediacy of desire. Bodies, beds, kisses, whispers, rain, flowers, gardens, moonlight and the sea create a sensual language in which nature participates in human intimacy. Love is physical and spiritual at once, experienced through the body and preserved through consciousness.
As relationships change, remembrance becomes a form of understanding. Former lovers continue to inhabit memory as people with whom part of a life was genuinely shared. Farewell can therefore become contemplation, and the experience of having loved remains valuable through what it has revealed about desire, generosity, hope and the self.
Gratitude provides the larger spiritual horizon of the collection. The book is dedicated to God, family, those once loved and those who remain loved. The poet understands her emotional history as part of the life she has received and embraces the intensity with which she has been able to experience it. Love becomes an apprenticeship through which consciousness grows.
This gives A Fleeting Dawn its characteristic serenity. Experience is revisited from the perspective of a woman capable of recognising its place within a larger journey. The present edition adds another dimension to this process. The original poems are followed by Haiku at Dawn, where the same emotional universe is recreated through concentrated poetic forms. Each haiku offers a second encounter with an earlier poem: an image is isolated, an emotion distilled, an instant held in a few lines. Free verse develops the experience; haiku captures its essential moment.
The two forms consequently establish a dialogue across time. The younger poet records the movement of emotion; the mature poet returns to its images and discovers what can remain when language itself is reduced to its essence. The structure of the book thus enacts the work of memory that its poems describe.
