Retired firefighter, paramedic, disaster responder, and counselor John A. Davis spent his life running toward other people's worst moments. At the center of this memoir is a second-alarm fire in Mandarin, Florida, where Davis was trapped beneath a collapsed roof truss and believed he was going to die. After helping hold back the fire while an elderly woman was rescued, he was pinned in the seat of the fire, burned, alone, and forced to rely on an inner voice that told him to get up, lift the weight, and get out. He survived, but the fire did not end when he escaped. It followed him home.
Through vivid and deeply human storytelling, Davis takes readers inside firehouses, rescue units, disaster deployments, and the quiet aftermath of emergency work. He writes about the kitchen table where firefighters process difficult calls, the rookies and mentors who shaped him, the devastating scenes that never fully fade, and the brotherhood and sisterhood of those who serve.

As a Crisis Intervention Officer and licensed mental health counselor, Davis later turned his own wounds into a mission to help first responders understand that strength is not silence and asking for help is not weakness.
