Roy Chapman was born in 1845 and grew up in the area around Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. When he was old enough, he worked as a cowboy for one of the large cattle ranches there, gaining experience operating ranches and participating in cattle drives. After he married and started his family, he dreamed of his own cattle ranch and moved to what is now Flagstaff, Arizona, to start it. Although his mother and wife often reminded him that the Bible said he was a sinner in need of salvation, he believed he was a good cowboy, and God would want him to help on His cattle drives when he got to heaven. This all changed in 1881 when Roy was bushwacked by horse thieves and left for dead. An Indian rescued him and treated his wounds until help arrived. When Roy discovers that the Indian is an angel sent from God, he is forced to accept that God has a plan for him, and he needs to change. Roy reflected on his experience and studied the Bible to learn about God, angels, and how he should live in response to God's word, writing down his spiritual epiphanies and commentary in composition notebooks. Roy impressed his local pastor and the pastor's seminary, and they incorporated Roy's insights into a pastoral studies textbook that became required reading for seminary students. Roy taught his children and grandchildren the spiritual lessons he learned and passed on his commentary notebooks and the original seminary textbook as family heirlooms. The family valued these heirlooms, which were preserved by those who inherited them, and they ended up with Roy's great-great-great grandson, Scott Grady.
