set of eighteen clues. Every clue is a plain, verifiable fact about
the person responsible - the letters in their name, its length, the
way it begins or ends. None is a trick. None is a false trail.
Taken together, they point to exactly one person.
Your task is simple to describe and deeply satisfying to carry out.
Read a clue. Cross out every suspect it rules out. Move to the next,
and the next, watching the field of possibilities narrow with each
one. When you have worked through all eighteen, a single name will
remain uncrossed. That name is the killer.
A REAL PUZZLE, FAIRLY MADE
This is a puzzle built to respect the solver. The suspect list is
deliberately shuffled, so there are no shortcuts, no blocks of names
to skip, and no way to guess your way to the answer. Every name must
be read and judged on its own. And unlike many puzzles of its kind,
the solution here is guaranteed: each book is verified to resolve to
exactly one suspect, so the answer you reach through careful
deduction is the only answer possible.
