Oli vuosi 1964. Metsänvartijan Selma-tyttären iloiset kesäpäivät kuluivat ulkona leikkien ja sadepäivinä vintillä äidin salaperäistä matka-arkkua tutkien. Heinäkuussa saapuivat tädit, sedät, enot ja serkut kesälomalle sydänmaalle. Silloin Selma sai leikkiä serkkujensa kanssa pihaleikkejä. Kesän jälkeen Selman elämä muuttui täysin, sillä hän joutui muuttamaan sedän perheen luokse kauppalaan käydäkseen kansakoulua. Selmalla ei ollut helppoa vieraissa oloissa. Jännitystä aiheutti myös Hilja-täti, joka oli tiukka kasvattaja. Koulussa Selmaa pilkattiin metsäkulmalaiseksi, mutta onneksi hänellä oli siellä kaksi ystävää Orkideh ja Ville.
