None of these beliefs seemed pertinent at this particular moment. This man's loss really hit home. They all had mothers and many had daughters or sons. Many could not help but forming a mental image of a loved one in a pool of blood.
Reasoning gave way to emotions, which usually drive human behavior. This man's emotional portrayal of his loss created a reasonable doubt in the pro-gun crowd's belief. Quietly the crowd dispersed without further debate.
