The field trip was supposed to last one day.
Jordan Voss transfers to Thornhill School on the worst possible morning: field trip day. Within minutes of arriving, Jordan is on a bus headed to Harrow Marsh Nature Reserve with a class of strangers and a teacher named Mr. Reed.
Something about Reed is wrong.
He knows Jordan's name before anyone introduces them. He reviews a blank clipboard for forty minutes. The road behind the bus, when the group arrives at the reserve, is not the road they came in on.
And the marsh itself is wrong. No birds. A sun that doesn't move. Phones showing impossible times. A clearing at the center of the reserve where Reed stops and says, quietly, that everything else radiates from here.
Then the afternoon stops making sense entirely.
Jordan, along with two other students who have been watching Thornhill's teachers longer than most, begins to understand what the marsh really is: a trap, set and maintained by something that has been operating at Thornhill for far longer than any teacher should. A trap designed to hold students in a loop of fear and disorientation, while something feeds on what fear produces.
The loop can be broken. But first, someone has to understand how it works.
And someone has to be willing to go back.
