The seventh in his visionary series of thirteen tone poems for orchestra, Liszt's Festklänge was originally intended as a wedding march for his own wedding to Princess Wittgenstein during a brief period in 1853 when it seemed there would be no obstacle to the nuptials from the Vatican and even includes a 'polonaise' section alluding to the Polish origins of the Princess. After the Vatican indefinitely postponed the anticipated permission, the work was first performed as a musical introduction to a Schiller play given on 9 September 1854 with the composer conducting the Weimar Hofkapelle.
